In this course we'll be exploring how people in the English county of Cornwall spoke in the past and speak today – in other words looking at both the Celtic language Kernewek and the regional dialect of English.
Our journey of discovery will include hands-on analysis of authentic materials, giving students an opportunity to practise and build on their knowledge of different levels of language, and apply this to a new subject matter. In addition, we'll attempt to shed light on and find answers to wider-reaching linguistic questions that touch on neighbouring fields. For example: What is the role of (a particular) language in the culture and identity of a group of speakers? What does it mean when a language is said to be "dead" and how can it be "brought back to life"? |
