"Society and Space - Places of Remembrance and Emancipation"

How does memories shape space into a place? Using examples from Chile and Germany, this class explores the relationships among memory, space, and place. The political tension between the memory question (how to remember) and the emancipation question (how to achieve freedom) became critical for the shaping of german and chilean spaces into places of remembrance. From this perspective, it is possible to give new meaning to urban struggles concerted against changes in the city that threaten its living space, reclaiming its historical memory and affirming the solidity “of its values against the dissolution of history in time timeless and the celebration of the ephemeral in the culture of virtuality real” (Castells 1998: 397). Although the identity between space and society in certain cases can lead to a defensive shutdown, if is able to see beyond its own special form of development geographically uneven, can trigger the emergence of initiatives to generate new local dynamics and build new cohesion social and cultural (Borja, 2003).
