This seminar is about ambiguity and gender across Anglophone literatures and cultures, from the eighteenth century to the present day. Based on the ongoing work of the DFG research group on ‘Ambiguity and Distinction: Cultural and Historical Dynamics’ and informed by cutting-edge research on ambiguity, this seminar will focus on ambiguity and gender in a variety of topics, settings and and media, including (but not limited to): film (Farinelli), travel reports (by Lady Montagu and others), reportage and life writing.
Selected literary and critical texts will be made available via a Moodle course. Students are kindly requested to purchase a copy of the memoir Me Hijra, Me Laxmi (2015) by Laxminarayan Tripathi. |
