Visions of the future highlight our very wishes and fears, as well as our views on the world. When it comes to literature, which portrays such visions, it also reflects current societal trends at the time of writing, often coupled with references to historic recurrence. As a mandatory topic in higher secondary ELT, analytical and creative approaches to engaging with such literature help to view society via different lenses and help to think through potential consequences of societal trends and decision making.
In this course, we will choose the books we will discuss from a set of dystopia, e.g. The Handmaid’s Tale (Atwood), The Testaments (Atwood), The Hunger Games (Collins), The Circle (Eggers), Brave New World (Huxley) or 1984 (Orwell). While we will read extracts from different books and will also include multimodal sources, such as film and art, each of you will engage with one chosen dystopian book within a group context and will, by the end of the course, have developed a potential plan and a microteaching unit for using the book in class. You will need to purchase this one chosen book. All other texts will be provided via Moodle. |
