The second lecture of the introductory module, Introduction to Linguistics II, explores the history of the English language as well as the methods and approaches of selected subfields of linguistics. The first weeks cover the development of English from its inception to the present day. We move on to discuss changes in the English language in areas such as phonology, morphology and pragmatics, relating back to the core concepts introduced in Introduction to Linguistics I. Finally, we explore the acquisition of language as well as ongoing variation and change in the use of the language. |
