This course focuses on contemporary (circa the last 100 years) variation in Englishes and English-based creoles throughout the Pacific, including, but not limited to, the Englishes spoken in the western United States and Canada, islands throughout the Pacific (e.g., Hawaiʻi, Marshall Islands), and the antipodes, Australia and New Zealand. The course is designed to be both a survey course, and cover topics on foundational, and cutting-edge ideas in the field of variationist sociolinguistics, dialectology, language change, and contact linguistics. This course will also expose students to hands-on work with Pacific varieties. Note to students: In the first part of the term (ca. 2 months), the course will run for the entire 120 minute slot. |
