This seminar is about postcolonial short fiction from the late 19th century to the present day. After an introduction to the short story as a genre and to the field of postcolonial studies, we will read and discuss a range of exciting short stories, from Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the UK, by acclaimed authors including Henry Lawson, Katherine Mansfield, Mary Beckett, Sam Selvon, Merle Collins, Hanif Kureishi, Jackie Kay, Andrea Levy and Rajeev Balasubramanyam. Students will have the chance to meet New-Zealand poet and short story writer Jan Kemp, who will read from her work on Saturday, 21 October at the upcoming "Australian Mobilities" conference. Please purchase copies of the two Reclam booklets listed below; a selection of further stories and critical texts will be made available via a Moodle course.
