We do not shy away from treating people (including ourselves) as fully responsible for their morally problematic actions, and thus as deserving of blame. But are we really fully moral responsible for our actions? In this course, we will explore the various factors – including unconscious states, situational influences, past experiences, emotions, ignorance, etc. – whose wide-ranging influence has been used in support of the thought that we are much less morally responsible for our actions than we think we are, in turn casting doubt on the legitimacy of our blame practices.
This course will be a seminar taught in English, and will consist mainly in discussion on assigned readings. Active engagement with the texts and participation in class are essential. Texts will be circulated electronically. |
